Summary

The last chopper game to hit consoles that didn't entail the destruction of enemy buildings and the rescuing of hostages was PlayStation's RC Stunt Copter. Lying somewhere between a simulator and an arcade game, Stunt Copter demonstrated just how difficult yet addictive it was to pilot one of these wingless contraptions. That was four years ago, and now the copter sim is back with a vengeance from Xicat, under the name of RC Copter Challenge, this time for PlayStation 2.

Making the best use of Sony's Dual Shock controller, players are taught to fly a chopper through the use of both analogue sticks, one for height and one for the rudder. There are several tutorial stages in the beginning, which prove invaluable, since hand-to-eye co-ordination in these games is something that can seriously only be achieved through practice and nothing else.

Progress in Copter Challenge takes you through several learning stages and gets you your piloting license before placing you in the main game. With a good 15-20 hours of play, Adventure mode challenges players to complete numerous obstacle courses within given time constraints. The events themselves are simple and include trivial but nonetheless fun tasks and games such as Catch and Hover. There's even a spoon race.

For a more in-depth game experience, pilots can use prize money to acquire new parts for upgrades or purchase a completely new chopper. Nine choppers are available and have differing levels of power and manoeuvrability, depending on cost.

RC Stunt Copter was a refreshing change from the onslaught of racers and beat-em-ups that nearly flooded the PlayStation market. The same is true of RC Copter Challenge. We can only hope to see more games like this one in the future.
