Summary

An all-new war game based entirely on the events that took place in Vietnam, Monte Cristo's Platoon for PC pits a newly-wed raw recruit against some of the most formidable and ruthless soldiers in the world. You're name's Martin Lionsdale, now get moving soldier!

Unusually deep for a war game, and with a great narrative, you will come to know your soldier's emotions, his relationship with his wife, and the War itself. You will also come to know several other key members of the platoon. As you successfully carry out your missions, you will climb the ranks to become a Lieutenant, responsible for a full infantry composed of specialist soldiers such as riflemen, snipers, scouts, engineers and machine gunners. There will be a comprehensive arsenal available from the outset, and weapons are very realistic with respect to impact and damage.

Platoon covers the period from the early days of the conflict in late 1965, to the height of battle in an unforgettable 1968, recreating some of the most tragic moments of the Vietnam war. Operation Shiny Bayonet and Operation Pershing are particularly memorable.

Platoon's game engine has been developed with great skill, and while the 3D itself is relatively simple when compared with other contemporary state-of-the-art projects, the in-game's special effects are a pleasure to behold. Grass effects, particle effects, explosions, dynamic shadows and environment mapping are particularly stunning.

With a full career mode, the ability to command as you see fit, vehicle control, support units and a musical score from BAFTA winning musician Tamas Kreiner, Platoon is a cracking game and a remarkable piece of software.
