Summary

We were first introduced to this little fella back in 1998, when the world was currently experiencing a 3D-platform frenzy, inspired by the genre-defining Super Mario 64. At the time, PlayStation played host to a plethora of similar titles, all which aspired to create the perfect free-roaming, 3D environment on Sony's first machine. Spyro the Dragon was one of the better attempts and has since become a popular and well-recognised gaming icon, having spawned two further sequels and a couple of handheld titles. Four years on and Vivendi has brought us the latest Spyro outing, in the form of the wittily titled Enter the Dragonfly.

Following Spyro's previous heroic quests, a temporary peace surrounds the realms and all the dragons get to relax and enjoy the Year of the Dragon Festival. However, you won't be surprised to hear that all is not as well as it seems, as the evil Ripto returns with a plan to steal the Dragonflies of the Dragon Realms, leaving the ever-valiant Spyro with no option but to put a stop to him.

To combat his foes, Spyro's existing set of abilities is enhanced with some nice new features such as electric, ice and bubble breath. Equipped with his newly acquired skills, some amazing new vehicles, and help from new and old friends, Spyro must find a way to return the Dragonflies and restore order to the Dragon Realm.

As far as gameplay is concerned, Enter the Dragonfly doesn't differ very much from the Spyro games of old. The collection of gems remains one of the tasks of the day, as does the disposal of numerous enemies, either with the Mario-esque head jump or occasionally by relying on one of his new abilities.

Over 30 levels of unique environments must be traversed, featuring such delights as rainbows, tornadoes, monsoons, and snowflakes, with our little hero running, jumping, and dodging his way across each. Hardly the most original of game concepts but a fun and involving adventure nonetheless.
