Summary

This is a fantastic adaptation of the equally fantastic Toca World Touring Cars PlayStation game. A bit of a late entrant, when you consider that bigger and bolder machines are already lined up for the next in the Toca series, Race Driver, Toca World Touring Cars on the GBA simply knocks spots off the likes of the Colin McRaes and V-Rallies for the same console. Slightly different genre, yes, but a racer on the GBA is limited in what it can do visually and aurally, and WTC does it better than any we've seen.

World Touring Cars means just that: as a team driver, you travel to the five continents, visit 14 famous racetracks, and compete against some of the most well known auto manufacturers and their drivers. The cars are all dressed up in team liveries, sponsors logos, spoilers and skirts and so on, but beneath all the fancy frippery, there indeed lies the likes of Alfa Romeo, Audi, Saab and Ford, to name but a few. In fact, all the cars from the PSX original are present, so those who played that version to the end will be delighted to find that the likes of the super-powerful AC Superblower and TVR Speed 12 are available in the later stages of the racing career.

The worldwide selection of tracks comprises of Silverstone, Monza, Nurburgring, Buenos Aires, Vancouver, Mexico City, Road America, Brasilia, Dijon, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, A1 Ring, TI Circuit Aida and Sugo - again, all from the original PlayStation version.

Imagine if you will, a miniature of the PSX's Toca WTC, 'cos that's what this amounts to. The rough and ready visuals of the original never took anything away from the gameplay, and the same visuals are well suited to the GBA screen. Got Toca Race Driver at home already? Well, get this too - dull journeys will become a thing of the past.
