Summary
The spirit and excitement of the Davis Cup arrives on the Gameboy Advance. Not just a simple tennis sim, this release from Ubi Soft focuses on the format of this tournament and the way in which it differs from most tennis competitions.
The Davis Cup is a team-based competition with countries competing against each other, as opposed to individuals. In the GBA game, the player can choose from any of the participating countries. This team will be under the command of a team captain, normally a non-playing member, who controls the strategy and composition of the team. This element is an important part of the GBA version as the player takes the role of the captain, nominating players and making the appropriate substitutions.
In the full Davis Cup mode, four team members are selectable from a total of eight, each with varying skills and attributes. The game follows the Cup’s unique competition mode with two singles matches, a doubles match, and then two further singles matches. Play continues throughout with emphasis on both management strategy as well as playing skill. Success unlocks harder groups, the idea being to win the Davis Cup with each group.
Overall, Davis Cup Tennis is a well-polished title. Attractive visuals are complimented by fluid character animation and convincing ball physics. The sound effects are faithful to the sport and well-sampled speech announces the scores. The depth provided by the management aspect of the game assures longevity.
