Summary

Since Myst was released in 1994, the stunning puzzler has managed to rack up sales in excess of five million. Early 2002, and Myst is claimed to be the greatest-selling PC title of all time. It only seems right that such a revered title gets the upgrade treatment. Enter Myst: The Masterpiece Edition. The original world of adventure and mystery has returned.

At the time of its original release, Myst was visually one of the most impressive pieces of work to grace the PC platform. It boasted astonishing pre-rendered environments that were original and imaginative. But as beautiful a game as it was, it soon became overshadowed by its successors and, like most games, was soon forgotten.

Now that Myst has been reworked, the game features an all new 24-bit colour mode that graphically brings it up to today’s standards, and rivals Riven and Myst 3. The game’s music samples have been remastered and feature brand new sound effects, and movie quality has been enhanced.

They may all be technical improvements, but the point is, with a game like Myst, atmosphere is of utmost importance, and these improvements do a much better job of immersing the player Myst’s fascinating gameworld.

Quite simply, it’s the same game using 21st century technology. Myst is a masterpiece and it deserves to stay that way.
