Summary

Sam is more serious than ever and he has the firepower to back it up. Serious Sam: The Second Encounter is exactly that, the eagerly awaited second instalment of Serious Sam from Take 2 Interactive.

Serious Sam is a slightly off the wall first-person shooter where cyberpunk meets fantasy fiction, a deadly combination. How does the idea of 12 new massive new levels grab you? To compliment over 20 specifically multi-player orientated deathmatch arenas. Oh yes, it's a fragfest.

At the end of the last game, Sam captured a Syrian spaceship and set off to destroy the great evil Mental. Shortly after take-off he tumbled back to Earth, deep into the heart of the South American Mountains, and into the clutches of Mental’s experienced destructive fighters. Doh! Sam must do everything in his power to defeat the hordes of alien scumbags and put a stop to Mental’s evil plans.

Graphically speaking, things have greatly improved since the first game. If your computer is a few shades off ninja status, you can always make minor sacrifices to ensure smooth frame rates.

Gameplay-wise, The Second Encounter delivers. In fact it kindly offers four-player split screen deathmatch possibilities, perfect for when you don’t have your home LAN set up. Alternatively, players can compete in up to 16-player deathmatches over the Internet or local access network, with six game modes to choose from. Also included is the acclaimed 'Serious Warped Deathmatch', created by A Few Screws Loose, one of the better deathmatch experiences currently available.

Three new weapons bring the total to fourteen, and consist of a flamethrower, a sniper rifle with 8X zoom, and the close range, but damaging chainsaw.

Serious Sam is polished enough to hold its own with the Quake 3’s and Unreal Tournaments out there, so check it out.
