Summary

Disney’s latest hit blockbuster movie release, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, is not only set for Hollywood stardom, but for video game stardom as well. The Lost Empire – Trial by Fire is now making its way into the home computer market with a release for PC.

The typically Disney storyline goes something like this: You are on a journey to discover the lost civilisation of Atlantis, a land shrouded in mystery for thousands of years. But the city is controlled and maintained by a mighty crystal that, if it fell into the hands of evil – the hands of explorer, Captain Rourke - could destroy everything, including Atlantis.

Unlike its Game Boy Color and Advance counterparts, Trial by Fire offers a highly realistic environment, both structurally and aesthetically. The game has been produced in full 3D and consists of many stunningly rendered environments that accurately represent the scenes from the hit film, thanks to the revolutionary LithTech game engine.

The game itself is played in a first-person perspective, but has a non-violent playing area. Very much a game of exploration, Trial by Fire offers a variety of puzzles that will challenge any games player. Whether it be a mystery of how to get from one place to another, or how to find a rare item, players are guaranteed a thought-provoking time.

There is a small element of combat, yes, but Trial by Fire thankfully lacks the blood and gore that can be seen in the Quake series and others like it.

As it stands, Trial by Fire for PC is by far the most accomplished version of the bunch. It looks beautiful and plays beautifully. What more need be said?
