If there has to be one type of game PCs are infamous for, its the flight simulator. Many of these games have set examples of what a flight simulator has to offer; others have not. FA/18 Precision Strike Fighter falls into the former category. Produced by little known but highly talented developer Graphism, the Microsoft Flight Simulator series now has some stiff competition.
Visually, FA/18 is meticulously accurate. Many of the games environments are vast as expected, but rarely do simulators go into such a high level of detail. Textures are smooth, thanks to OpenGL support, and a variety of atmospheric effects complement the games ability to recreate a realistic environment.
Technically, this game is equally accomplished. The aircraft themselves have been accurately modelled, and the addition of a flight control stick boosts the games realism immensely. The flight dynamics are polished and, as mentioned above, benefit greatly from the use of a professional controller. Enemy AI is cunning and you must utilise many of the crafts plethora of controls to outwit the opposition.
As far as longevity is concerned, there is little that can be done to improve on the lifespan of FA/18. If a whole bestiary of preset missions isnt enough to keep you busy, you can take advantage of the games mission editor. Here, players have the capability to create missions and set victory conditions. Theoretically, players are able to explore an infinite number of custom missions.
Could you really ask for anything more from a flight simulator?
