Summary

The Hoyle series of games, published by Sierra, consists of many popular board games, casino games and a variety of other gambling events. Among the company’s line up is Backgammon and Cribbage for PC. Traditionally tabletop games, Backgammon and Cribbage play just fine with a mouse and keyboard, so there’s no expensive peripherals to worry about. The only thing you need to worry about is mastering the rules of the games. For beginners, a tutorial mode is available where you can perfect your skills as a player.

Backgammon takes place on a board of triangular shapes and counters. The aim of the game is to make your way around the board as quickly as possible, clearing the counters in the process. The first player to clear all their counters from the board wins the game.

Cribbage, while technically a board game, involves a deck of cards. Using card combinations to score moves, your task is to reach the finish line on the board before the other player. Players are able to challenge up to ten different computer controlled opponents with varying difficulty levels. Those with ‘net access can rejoice, as they can challenge their other Internet-ready friends in a head-to-head game. Winning either of the two games is highly satisfying. The games aren’t too lengthy, and this encourages the player to play another game... and another game... and another game. There is an addictive quality to these games that makes Hoyle Backgammon and Cribbage well worth having at home, if only to keep you away from the casino, and the possible loss of your shirt.
