Summary

In recent years, every adventure video game that has appeared on a mainstream platform has aimed to close the gap between the movie industry and the video games industry. Many software houses are now concentrating on style and epic story lines rather than enhanced gameplay and originality. But games like Konami’s Metal Gear Solid have proved to be exceptions, giving the player a highly playable and interactive movie experience that remains loyal to the video game experience. Sony’s development team is now trying to equal Konami’s benchmark performance with the release of Extermination on PlayStation 2.

Based in the Antarctic, you are an operative of the Marines Special Forces RECON. You have received a distress signal that brings you to a military base. But something has happened. Not long after your arrival, you will come across a deadly virus, one that mutates everything in its path. Now here’s the really shocking part; your task is to rescue the survivors and eradicate the virus. Okay, so the story’s not exactly original.

Your journey throughout the game will see you constantly updated with numerous movie clips, pushing the story forward. But real progress can only be made by picking up the controller and kicking some serious butt. Wandering through the wonderful 3D environments, you will uncover various helpful weapons, some of which are more valuable than others. You must use your resources to blast away mutated creatures (mostly of human origin) and avoid being preyed upon by discovering mutant traps before you fall into them. Depending on personal preference, the game can be played both in the third and first person, giving two different slants on gameplay.

Extermination bears many survival horror characteristics reminiscent of Resident Evil, and because the Capcom classic hasn’t made an appearance on PS2 as yet, this game will whet the appetites of monster-hungry gamers around the globe.
