Summary

The racing game is one of the most diverse genres ever seen in the video games industry. Ranging from Formula One sims to the likes of Lego Racers, the options are seemingly endless. And while some racing genres are more populated than others, there’s a lot to be said about some of them. Snowmobile games, in particular, are technically difficult to pull off, and perhaps that’s why they are quite sparse. Nevertheless, GT Interactive and SSS have given it a shot with Snowmobile Racing.

It has to be said that Snowmobile Racing is a somewhat ‘no frills’ racing game. It lacks an involving introduction and has a minimal sense of progression. After choosing to race (which is just about the only choice you can make) you must select one of the four available racecourses. Races will take you across locations such as Iowa and the icy lakes of Minnesota. The choice isn’t endless, but the challenge is great. You have no driver options, so the losers’ argument of “well you had the faster racer” is a futile one. This game is down to skill and skill alone. The racetracks look very simple due to their frosty nature, but are in fact quite complex, featuring varying terrain and corner-ridden courses. Snowmobile Racing isn’t visually astounding, but with a decent graphics card capable of anti-aliasing, it should look much more appealing.

There is by no means anything special about this game, but simplicity is often the best way to a great game.
