Summary
Namco’s ability to convert great arcade games onto the home console is shown in the likes of Ridge Racer and Tekken on PlayStation. More importantly, Namco’s expertise in the shooting genre is also reflected on the console. Following the more serious Time Crisis, Point Blank turned out to be a highly playable and addictive number. As the third in the series exclusive to PlayStation, Point Blank 3 makes a return to one of the company’s most popular developments.
Appearing for a third adventure, Dr. Don and Dr. Dan are once again faced with the perils that lurk on the gun-shaped island. Featuring in this instalment are a whopping eighty stages that are a mix of classic stages from its predecessors and all new events, courtesy of the arcade giant. To challenge players with any level of competence, this game consists of four difficulty settings that have a considerably varying challenge. Of the stages available, each has unique themes with unique rules that must be complied with to score reasonable points. Levels are generally reasonably short, but as a whole, each challenge setting has sixteen stages. Your final score will be reflected on the game’s leader board. Fortunately, Point Blank 3 makes a return to old school methods of gameplay, whereby achieving a high score is the main motivation for playing.
As great as the game is in single player, there is no doubt that playing against up to seven of your friends brings out the best in Point Blank 3. Considered by many to be a party game, Namco’s last Point Blank outing on PlayStation is the best of the series.
