Summary

Since Super Off-Road Racer hit the arcades back in 1990, top-down racing games have been a firm favourite amongst a certain gamers. To say that Mini Rally Deluxe is simply an unofficial version of the classic arcade is as true as it is flattering. This is SORR with radio controlled cars and it plays wonderfully.

You are given a choice of three basic car types. A monster truck, a hotrod and an off-road dragster. You then race your little 3D machines around a variety of pre-rendered tracks. You have at your disposal a turbo boost option which you can use three times per lap, another aspect of the game which has been completely lifted from Super Off Road. Look, we don’t wish to press the point or anything but the similarities between the games is startling. When activated, the turbo boost in Mini Rally Deluxe emits a little puff of smoke before jetting your car forward in exactly the same way as the nitro did in its unofficial parent game.

One of the most enjoyable features about this game is the wide range of interactive tracks Sierra has included. There is a crazy golf track, a desert track complete with a rattlesnake, and several Micro Machines style back garden circuits. You can control the cars with the keyboard, a joystick or the mouse. Keyboard and joystick controls are fine but mouse control is terrible. Instead of left being left and right being right, the car has no lateral relativity to the mouse movements. You have to just drag the mouse in the direction you wish to travel.

This being said, Mini Rally is a fantastic game and will please all fans of this type of game.
