Summary

This war strategy game promises to be “As real as it gets!” and succeeds pretty well. Set at the end of World War 2 in the north of France, Close Combat Invasion Normandy follows the struggle of the Allied forces to regain Europe through France.

The game is split into a series if distinct game modes, allowing the player to fully customise his war experience. The main game feature follows real events from WWII. The progression of the Allied forces from the Utah coastline into the heart of France is accurately recreated. There are also skirmishes built into the game which will allow the player to hone certain skills to use in the main game. You can practice ambushing enemy soldiers or perfect the techniques needed to storm a defended building.

Developers SSI have taken great pains to ensure a realistic War management experience. Combat psychologists where employed to bring a more complete feeling to the game and this shows in the detailed soldier options. Each individual trooper has a morale level indicator that must be kept high if he is to remain an efficient fighter.

There is also a high level of enemy AI with opposing forces fleeing into buildings when put under pressure, basically acting as though they care about living. SSI has also included historically realistic weather and weaponry, vehicles and buildings.
