Summary

Hudsonsoft’s classic Bomberman was a huge, huge hit during the beginning of the 16-bit era. It may have even been responsible for the kick-start of the multi-player era. Nevertheless, its initial success fuelled the motivation to release several further games that were tweaked to perfection and included brand new features and power ups. Now available for online play, Atomic Bomberman is one of the most addictive games available.

Beginning a game of Bomberman is simply a case of selecting which players are human and which are computer controlled, and deciding how many players there will be in the arena. Retaining its 2D top-down perspective, players must run around the grid, setting down bombs in an attempt to collect power ups and obliterate the opposition. While this may be simple in theory, it’s harder than it sounds. In offline mode alone, Atomic Bomberman supports up to eight players simultaneously. This can cause a massive surge in on-screen action that can often prove highly confusing, but equally addictive. While there is a lot of skill involved, the incorporation of 10-player online capability somewhat randomises the outcome of the game. And that’s not a bad thing, particularly for inexperienced players. The game’s power ups can often be the key to success within Atomic Bomberman. Some let you drop multiple bombs, while others allow you to kick the bomb into the path of the opposition. But be careful not to pick up items that put you at a disadvantage.

Atomic Bomberman is without a doubt one of the greatest multi-player games available, and is easily up there at the top of the playability pile with classics such as Mario Kart and Worms.
