Summary

Most Disney games in development these days centre around a specific character or set of characters. Rarely are such a large number of cartoon types gathered together and placed into a promising racing game. Magical Racing Tour on Game Boy Color looks to give players of the handheld phenomenon an enjoyable experience.

There aren’t many 2D racing games available today that give such a unique perspective on the genre. Magical Racing Tour has a left-to-right scrolling approach to races, which is a feature worth experiencing in itself. After choosing one of the two modes of play you are given the opportunity to select one of a number of both classic and new age Disney characters, including the likes of Chip and Moe Whiplash. Time Trail mode is self-explanatory, but the Adventure challenge is much more involving. Only a fraction of the game’s thirteen tracks will be available to begin with, but as you progress, winning races earns you access to more challenging tracks, all of which are uniquely themed. There are bonus intervals at specific sections throughout the adventure that present a different challenge, forcing the player to temporarily adopt a new strategy.

Adjusting to the controls and points of view of the game is relatively simple. Because of this simplicity, Magical Racing Tour is instantly playable to any Game Boy Color owner. It’s fun to play and accessible to all audiences, and that’s what counts.
