Summary

The golf simulator is a surprisingly popular genre, although certain games can require a great deal of time and attention before a successful round of golf can be played. Other games often prove to be more popular due to their lack of seriousness, making them more fun to play. Running alongside the likes of Mario Golf of Nintendo 64 and Everybody’s Golf on PlayStation is Swing Away Golf – the first title of its kind to be released on PlayStation 2.

Before beginning a proper game of golf you will come across a vast array of playing options that give the player more freedom within the game. Modes of play include tournament, story, and other sub games that are based around specific golfing qualities, such as a challenge for the longest drive. After selecting one of the game’s seven individually personalised characters, you will be able to participate in a round of golf on one of seven 18-hole courses. Taking a shot and placing the ball where you want it on the fairway is surprisingly easy to begin with, allowing even novice players to finish a round under par. As you progress, the courses become more challenging and there are more variables to take into consideration, such as hills, bunkers and wind speed. Thankfully you can take in-game tutorials that give you the chance to perfect your skills as you see fit.

Swing Away Golf isn’t quite the game it could have been, but for PlayStation 2 owners it’s still well worth a look. Place those bets and challenge up to three of you friends in this fun-to-play experience.
