Summary

EA’s latest batch of Formula One games have proved very popular with gamers, and although this is mainly thanks to their achievements on 3D platforms, the Game Boy Color version of F1 Championship Season 2000 shouldn’t go unnoticed. The ten-year-old handheld is now surpassing people’s expectations and F1 Season 2000 is a great example of what the machine is capable of.

After a fantastic FMV mini introduction of real F1 video footage, you will soon uncover what appears to be a fully comprehensive F1 title. All the drivers, including Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen are there, as well as a full compliment of teams and cars. What’s more, all 17 rounds of the F1 Championship are available to race. When participating in a race on your preferred track, however, the lack of surrounding detail and track design means that most of the tracks are unrecognisable from their real-life counterparts. However, the power of the Game Boy Color really comes to life when racing in Monaco. For the first time, EA’s development skills have allowed them to incorporate a real 3D tunnel into the infamous Monte Carlo circuit; a real achievement by anyone’s standards. Unsurprisingly, the controls of the Game Boy conversion are extremely simple. Accelerate, brake, turn left and turn right; that’s all there is to it.

With a complete bestiary of statistics from the 2000 season and an incredibly simple control mechanism, F1 Championship Season 2000 is immediately accessible to anyone who owns a Game Boy Color. To date, this is probably the most technologically advanced Game Boy game, and that in itself should see it do very well.
