Summary

Flight simulators aren’t especially popular in the console market, and are often limited to PC-owning players. Every so often a flight game is released on a mainstream console that fans of the genre will take note of. AeroWing’s success lead Crave Interactive to develop the sequel, set to be released on Dreamcast.

While most PC instalments of the genre have an undesirable complexity that requires most of the keyboard to operate professionally, the Dreamcast controller, complete with analogue control offers easy-to-learn but challenging-to-master methods of handling. After choosing your preferred fighter plane (each with different handling attributes) you will automatically be taken into a non-compulsory training mission. It is advisable that you play this part of the game a little and familiarise yourself with game mechanics and controls. When you’re ready to begin a game you can either choose to perfect your skills in a set of short control missions, or begin one of a number of challenges. There are twelve to choose from in the beginning, and all have their own scenarios and difficulty settings. Essentially, you will be given the order to shoot down the opposition and land safely. There are a number of variables in the missions that will affect your challenge, such as weather and time of day. Nighttime challenges are considerably more tasking than most other missions.

AeroWings 2 is strangely both easy to play, yet surprisingly accurate; a rare combination of attributes that makes it appealing.
