Summary

Neo Turf Masters has to be the single greatest arcade golf experience ever created. Forget all that track-ball operated Golden Tee stuff you may have been getting up to lately, this is where it’s at.

You get a choice of golfer from various parts of the world. There is a big hitting Brazilian, a technical Brit and a triangle headed German who’s stats render him a scum character.

You then get a choice of four golf courses from around the world, ranging from the tranquil mountains of Japan to the beach front in Australia. There are also courses based in the States and Germany.

As with most golf games this title is timing and decision based. You get to choose from a full compliment of clubs and have the option to apply hook or slice to your shots.

The courses are tough. Even the opening holes on each course have the possibility to trip you up with some of the skinniest fairways you will ever see. This is where the game excels. It is quite hard but victory seems completely achievable. As you line you shot up, with just enough slice to sneak around the trees at the dogleg you feel sure that everything is going your way. Then you take the shot, the ball bounces off the tree trunk and out of bounds.

When you review your shot you realise that it was your mistake. Not high enough or not taking the wind into consideration are often to blame.

SNK also included a comedy close-up system so that when the game is in play and an unusual event happens, a window appears on the screen to highlight it.

All very cool and well worth a few coins down at the local arcade.
