Summary

While role-playing games have become more and more populated in European territories, not many have the development magnitude that exceeds that in Final Fantasy, and consequently the finished result is less accomplished. Swing Entertainment is company that continues to grow in the volatile world of video games, and is now challenging some of the world’s finest developers with Record of Lodoss War.

In this particular adventure the evil high priest, Wagnard, is on a bender, and if his twisted plan is successful, Lodoss will become nothing more than a land of death and war. After being resurrected by the Mage of Lodoss, Wart, you begin your fantasy journey on a quest to rid the world of evil once and for all. Only then will you be able to rest in peace. Thankfully, since RPGs can be complex, a compulsory training session has been incorporated into the beginning of the game. Once you have got to grips with the in-game basics, you can begin the game’s adventure as a level-one character. As you progress through the dungeons that await you, you will have to slay numerous creatures, both human and otherwise, to achieve higher levels that will make you stronger. There is a careful balance between the game’s challenge and the character’s statistics that means if you play thoroughly, you will be ready to take on the final battle with Wagnard with relative ease.

An RPG’s system of progression is always one that sets the challenge of such a game, and Lodoss War has been well crafted in this respect. It doesn’t have the epic story line of other masterpieces, but it is a great challenge that has some wonderful special effects and is ultimately a rewarding game to play.
