Summary

As the license holder for the Star Trek-based series of video games, Activision is partially responsible for bringing Gene Roddenberry’s creation to life in video games. In this instalment from Activision, players get the (albeit virtual) privilege of captaining a Galaxy Class starship through thousands of light years of space.

Investigating the remains of an obliterated Starfleet R&D station, apparently destroyed by an eruption from a nearby sun, you and the crew of the Enterprise must uncover the cause of the disaster. But as the investigation unfolds, you will uncover disturbing secrets and a hidden plot that may result in the fall of the Federation.

This typically epic Star Trek story is told within a highly sophisticated game of space combat and tactics. Using the relevant keyboard and mouse commands, you will be hunted by other well-known races and be forced to engage several deadly rivals in combat, including the Klingons and the cold-blooded Cardassians.

You must learn to manoeuvre through 3D environments and emerge victorious after dispensing your Photon Torpedoes in horrible space battles. And all this can be done from your commanding chair. But if you don’t have the same level of confidence that Janeway has in her Voyager crew, you can take control of the bridge’s primary stations, such as tactical and helm.

The game environments have been beautifully crafted and the real-time rendered ships have been replicated with incredible accuracy. Special effects and space anomalies help to give what could have been a bland setting an extraordinary level of detail and variety.

Despite the fantastic single-player game, the multi-player options available to the player are the most rewarding. Online gameplay options mean that you can challenge good friends or complete strangers over the lovely Internet to battle some infamous space-based races.

When all of the above is brought together onto a single plastic disk, you have yourself a complete, thrilling, authentic and interactive Star Trek experience.
