Summary

Snowboarding is getting a futuristic push in SSX. This isn't your normal snowboarding title, this is pure adrenaline racing action with a twist. This is board-crossing, this is fun and it’s only available on PlayStation 2. SSX (Snowboard Super Cross) borrows elements from Tony Hawk's successful skateboarding games and improves on them. Expect technical combinations and hi-speed, high-scoring big air jumps. The more tricks you pull off, the higher your adrenaline meter and that means faster speeds. Electronic Arts racer is excellent in both the gameplay and graphics departments.

One of the reasons SSX is so impressive is the massive scale of the courses on offer. This game is huge, but because the pace is so fast you'll be flying through the levels in no time at all. There are over 8 available characters to choose from. Each of these riders has different characteristics, so finding a snowboarder that matches your playing style is simply a matter of experimentation. Each character is made up of over 5,000 polygons to give a detailed and realistic look.

This isn't a snowboarding game in the traditional sense. One of the stages is set in an indoor Tokyo stadium. This stage is circular and features crazy speed-ups and launchers and pinball bumpers. You can hit a ramp, grab some air and find a hidden shortcut to gain an advantage over the competition. The Tokyo track also has one of the biggest jumps in the game. There is a fan in the middle of level, so when you reach the bottom, you are transported back up to the top for another lap.

The music in SSX is superb; if you are into techno break beat you are in for an aural treat. SSX features original and licensed tracks from Mix Master Mike, Rahzel, Aprodite and Mickey Finn. This kind of music suits the game and gets you pumped up even more. SSX is a top game, enjoy!
