Summary

With every gaming genre there is at least one breakthrough game providing a benchmark in standards. Platform – Mario, beat-em-up - Streetfighter, god game – Populous etc. With real time strategy games, the genre has been well and truly defined by the Command and Conquer series from Westwood. With fifteen releases spanning various incarnations, Command and Conquer is the best selling of all the real-time-strategy brands, releasing games on the Saturn, Playstation, N64 and PC.

Westwood have jigged up the engine from the original Red Alert and made some unexpected and surprising changes to the game-play. Red Alert 2 plays much quicker than its predecessor, with action starting much sooner. There is less preparation time, and manufacturing times have been cut.

For the first time Westwood have freed you from the confines of playing as the Americans or Russians. You can now choose from nine nations, controlling planes, blimps, tanks, amphibious vehicles, everything you need for a really good war.
When you install the game you will get the option of signing up for a free Westwood account. This will then allow you to play in real-time against opponents from anywhere in the world, via the internet.

As far as sequels go, Command and Conquer: Read Alert 2 is very much different from its predecessor and though it retains the features that made the original so successful, stands in its own right as a quality title.
