Summary

Ever since the creation of the role-playing game, the use of dialogue boxes has always been an unattractive feature. Even in recent times, the lack of speech has always acted as a deterrent for many curious game players. Koudelka is among the first wave of games to feature full voice-overs, and no dialogue boxes; an attractive quality for many role-playing fans. Consequently a game with pre-rendered backdrops, FMV and speech, means lots of disk space. As a four-disc game, Koudelka is evidently of epic proportions.

Set in Wales, 1898, you initially take on the role of Koudelka, a beautiful woman with many mysterious qualities. As you progress, you will eventually take control of a further two characters, each with their own unique personality. Many of the game’s earth shattering events will be presented in good quality FMV, giving Koudelka a highly cinematic feel, perhaps even more so than the Final Fantasy series. As a typical RPG, the inclusion of turn-based combat was inevitable; not that this is a bad thing. Battles take place on grid-like arenas, and you must use your abilities of agility, magic and strength to overcome the random battles that await you. As a complete game, Koudelka could be referenced to number of other games within the genre, but ultimately, it is its own game; and not a bad one at that.
