Summary

The racing genre has become a much-saturated division of the video games industry in recent years, with the likes of Gran Turismo, Colin McRae, and TOCA receiving not-so-good clones. Some games do manage to stand out on their own, whether it be for their realism, mechanics or otherwise. Midtown Madness goes along the lines of Driver and Grand Theft Auto in an all out race-fest across two of the world’s most known cities.

Choosing from the cities of either San Francisco or London, you are given complete freedom drive around the road network, stopping to see some of the city’s famous landmarks along the way. Just be careful not to distract yourself from the goals of the game. Cities this large require quite some development time if they are to be as realistic as possible. Microsoft have shown their development skills here, since the cities are detailed, with fantastic draw distances. City races can be much more fun if you get to drive classic vehicles like double decker buses, fire engines, and even minis.

Effectively, Midtown Madness 2 is something of a surreal racing simulator, and works as great practice for getting to know your way around the two cities. Overall, the game’s fantasy factor of being able to drive as dangerously as possible through real cities proves an enjoyable experience.
