Summary

Video game mascots were highly desirable during the mid-nineties, and with Nintendo and Sega having Mario and Sonic, Sony’s newly introduced PlayStation was lacking one of its own. Croc was once one of the viable candidates for the platform, but soon after, the series went its own way and began making appearances on other platforms. He is now available for the second time on Game Boy Color as he once again has to face a showdown with arch-enemy, Baron Dante, to rid his land of the evil Dantinis.

The handheld’s technical restrictions mean that Croc 2 has been forced into a top-down point of view for his next outing. But as far as Game Boy visuals are concerned there is nothing to complain about. Locations are varied, colourful, and the on-screen blur that dogged the machine for so many years is non-existent. Soon after learning to move around in these environments you will encounter some very fast moving enemies, the Dantinis, that seem excessively difficult to defeat to begin with. But with practice, you will be able learn their movements and attack strategies to overcome any obstacle they present. Croc’s abilities include high-speed running, tail-whipping and stomping. You must learn to use these abilities effectively to progress through the game’s twelve levels that sprawl across four themed worlds.

Croc 2 is a well-executed title that boasts challenging gameplay, lovely visuals, and has an addictive quality that reaches its younger target audience with ease.
