Summary
Although the N64 is now considered by many to be a dead console, there is still a little support for the platform. In terms of genre penetration, there haven’t been that many RPG’s released for the platform, other than the classic Zelda games that are now years old. Mid-2001, and having the minuscule 64-bit market to itself, THQ squeeze out Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage.
In this particular adventure, you take on the role of the mysterious Alaron, a seventeen-year-old who knows little of his past. After an attack in the forest in which he is left for dead, he is discovered and treated by an old woman who convinces him to seek out his past and uncover his destiny. It is here that this classic story begins.
Role-playing games can go one of two ways; they can be a linear experience featuring random battles and complex menus similar to the Final Fantasy series, or they can follow Nintendo’s free-roaming approach, shown in Zelda. Aidyn Chronicles essentially falls into the latter category. Emphasis has been placed on the non-linear aspect of this game. Aside from a little guidance, players are permitted to select and choose the order they complete many of the game’s tasks in. Random weather effects help increase the realism of the game world greatly. In typical role-playing fashion, battles, spells and buying and selling numerous items play a big part in Aidyn Chronicles. But it is the four-player option that differentiates the game from most others in the genre. Up to four characters can roam the Aidyn world, looking for trouble in the game’s turn-based battle sequences. It’s a nice touch that broadens the target audience for this game.
Aidyn Chronicles is indeed a huge game that will take many hours to complete, but it’s well worth it.
