Summary

Konami’s king of football returns in yet another guise. ISS is here to show the opposition how it’s really done. The players’ choice of football games, this new version has improved graphics, awesome player movements, and is simply the best re-creation of the beautiful game ever.

There’s so much thought gone into ISS Pro Evolution, it’s mind-boggling. Here we have a footy game which makes a fair few demands on the participants, by virtue of ISS’s insistence on keeping it real. You can’t just go play cavalier football like many other PSX titles in this genre, you’ll be found out pretty swiftly. Strategy is the keyword here. Prepare your team properly before matches, sort out the tactics and personnel in advance, and when the whistle blows for kick-off, you may just stand a chance of scoring the odd goal or two. Whether you choose to play a counter-attacking style, a defensive formation, or any number of styles, the opposition defence is mostly in mean mood when playing against the computer.

It’s international teams only with ISS Pro Evolution, and an annoying minor detail is that all the familiar faces are here, but not the names. The lack of an official license dictates that real player names cannot be used initially, but an editing facility soon sorts out that particular niggle.

Konami’s smashing ISS Pro Evolution more than lives up to the pre-match hype. Anything less than a wonderfully playable, beautifully presented game would be a shame. They haven’t let us down.
