Summary
Hey look, it’s another football game. Is it time to get excited, then? Well, not really, because it’s just another football game taking up valuable space. Electronic Arts have already given us their FIFA series of games so why sully the fine name they’ve made for themselves with this? Like its PlayStation version, FA Premier League Stars gives the impression that it’s been rushed somewhat: a case of ‘will this do?’ As far as the seasoned footy player is concerned, the answer is an emphatic ‘no’.
FA Premier League Stars features (wait for it) Premier League teams only. No extras, no relegation dogfights and no newly- promoted whipping boys to take on. The game’s most radical feature is its ‘gambling’ facility, wherein it’s possible to ‘win’ players from the opposition by each player using their star players as stakes. Lose the match and you lose your player. Win the match, and you gain the opposition’s star man. It’s as simple as that. Now this is a novel and different concept, if not a truly great one, but if EA really feel the need to fleece PC footballers, then why not graft this concept onto a game that’s not so frenetically paced, even on its slowest setting? FA Premier League Stars is too action-packed for its own good, akin to an old-fashioned game of ‘kick and rush’.
Everything about FA Premier League Stars is second division, from the ropey graphics to the frantic and seemingly out of control gameplay, not forgetting the grating tones of smug, self-satisfied Sky Sports commentators Tyler and Gray. If that isn’t enough to put you off, try spending a whole season with them. Give FA Premier League Stars a miss, and if you must have a game of this ilk, go for the 2001 version with its more refined gameplay and improved visuals. Just don’t forget to turn down the commentary.
