Summary

Tiger Woods 99 PGA Tour offers every kind of competition you could ever wish to find on a console title in this genre. Casual practice or Stroke Play contest, the unrivalled pressure of the Skins Game, and the ultimate test of skill and consistency that is a full Tournament or Tour Play, it’s all here. Did I forget to mention the head-to-head battle of the Shoot Out and the team play of Foursomes and Four Ball games? To say that this game has all bases covered is an understatement.

Some of the terminology may cause a few creased brows amongst those not too familiar with the game of golf, so pay attention. Practice is straightforward: take as long as you like to get into the swing of things, and soon you’ll be stroking the ball around like a pro. Foursomes is a game of two teams, the two players on each team sharing a ball and taking alternate turns. Four Ball is the same team game, but each player has his own ball. The Skins Game is where things can get interesting, especially with friends, as it involves money. Each hole played is worth a certain amount and the winning golfer at the end of the round is the one with the fattest wallet.

With so much green on screen, it’s pointless to wax lyrical about how good or bad this game looks. It looks okay, not too garish and not too dull. Interested punters’ main concern should be how well it plays, and it’s a pleasure to report that it’s a doddle to use and hugely addictive.
