Summary

Popular for its young and fresh feel, Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers was a huge hit on the big screen back in 1997. Movie tie-ins have becoming more and more popular in recent years, and as such, it seems a surprise that it took three years for a software house to pick up on this. Anyway, it’s here now, and as a strategy combat game for PC from Microprose.

In year 2268, the Arachnids made an attack on Earth, and after hunting down their home planet, it’s time for the highly militarised population of Earth to finish this battle once and for all. Since you are to invade a planet with millions of giant-sized bugs, I would personally advise that you take advantage of the game’s training sessions before going into the game proper. On board the planet, you will come across 20 different planetary locations, each with their own unique landscapes and variables. You get to command and control a fleet of troops that will eventually come across as many as fifteen types of Arachnid. Strategies involve taking troop formations, weapon choices and methods of approach (stealth, aggressive). When formulated correctly, you should be able to give the bugs a pretty hard time.

All in all, Starship Troopers is like any other strategy game on the PC format, only dressed in Starship Troopers’ clothes. However, it is a great combat game, and will be relished by fans of both the genre and the film.
