Summary

Mad Max is a NES game that is based on the post-apocalyptic movie world which launched Mel Gibson (as the titular) to super stardom. The game is a Shoot'Em Up where you take control of a futuristic armoured car and the viewpoint is top-down scrolling a la Micro Machines.

As you've probably guessed, gamers assume the role of Mad Max, the premise being to survive life after the end of the world by fighting gangs known as survivalists. The highways are a dangerous place to be and life is certainly cheap. In order to survive, you must collect essentials, such as water, food, money and gasoline to continue racing throughout the desert wasteland. There are five different stages to Mad Max. Each level consists of a road scene and the Arena. Your goal is to find and enter the Arena from each roadway so you can battle the other gangs there. Fuel and ammunition are extremely hard to come by, so you must remember to be resourceful. However, food and water can be traded at roadside stops for fuel, ammo and the all important Arena pass. At the end of the last level, you will meet the Ultimate Warrior (not the WWF wrestler of the same name) in a final crossbow battle in the Arena. Only after he is defeated can you truly be known as Mad Max.

The controls in Mad Max are very simple, given that there is only the 'A' button to use - to fire dynamite. In order to drive the car, all you need to do is press the direction you wish to travel on the control pad. Graphically, Mad Max is poor even by NES standards, with the sprites being dull in colour and lacking detail. The music is a dire affair and there isn't even a hint of Tina Turner's 'We Don't Need Another Hero' anywhere. Having said that, the playability is good and the game is on the whole very enjoyable.
