Summary

Activision’s Dark Reign: Future of War is a welcome addition to the ever-growing PC real-time strategy genre in which the usual threats to Earth occur for you to eliminate. It’s hard work being the hero. Still, ‘Saviour of Earth’ is a title worth striving for, at least in a virtual sense.

Dark Reign is very much a run-of-the-mill RTS game, but it’s certainly one of the better combat-based experiences for the platform. The complete main game consists of dozens of tasking battles that unfold across a variety of land, sea and air-based locations. Players must control and navigate armies of troops and other miscellaneous weapon-wielding things through enemy infested areas to secure themselves a ride to the next level of the game.

As with most RTS games, there are many variables to consider when playing. Aspects such as line-of-sight, height of terrain and the terrain itself are among the most crucial. Get to know your battlefield and you get to know the enemy.

Those looking for something a little more sociable can explore an in depth series of multi-player options that include co-operative, competitive, and alliance modes of play. You can even create your own battlefield using a very handy mission editor. As such, Dark Reign: Future of War is a highly extensible game with an great number of game possibilities. Well worth playing.
