First Looks// EGX Rezzed 2016: Assault Suit Leynos

Japanese anime and giant robots are two things that apparently cannot be parted from one another. Assault Suit Leynos from Dacue Software is an excellent demonstration of that very fact as it is a PS4 game that actually looks not too dissimilar to a SNES game (barring the fact that there are a lot of sprites on the screen at the same time, moving very quickly and there is not a single hint of flickering to be seen anywhere).

There is a back story to Assault Suit Leynos, but I'm not going to divulge it here as quite frankly you don't really need to know. Just take it for granted that you play someone driving a massive mechanised exoskeleton that can almost single-handedly take on an entire invading army with little to no assistance.

Assault Suit Leynos is a very basic game that requires the player to walk/jump left to right across the screen while obliterating anything that is shooting at them and protecting those that aren't. Assault Suit Leynos may be powerful, but it still needs the support of the friendly forces it is fighting alongside. So much so that the player is required to interact with these units closely to ensure their survival.

The short time I had with Assault Suit Leynos saw me take on a series of enemy robots while battling very large boss machines that where so big I could only see a section of them on the screen.

To take them down required me to shoot at soft spots that littered their outer hull that, once hit repeatedly, caused them to explode in suitably dramatic fashion.

The primary reason I gave Assault Suit Leynos so much of my time at Rezzed 2016 was the pseudo-retro visuals that it boasted and the tightness of the controls that made it so much fun to play and experience. It harkens back to a type of game I played many years ago on the Amiga/SNES/Megadrive days but with the added bonus of not being so poorly designed and ridiculously difficult.

Assault Suit Leynos is due out on the PS4 later this year.
