Which is a complete contrast to the latter part of the game where an older, more confident Link is handed to the player. One that doesn't have to prove that he's actually a grown up. His insecurities have gone, but the tasks in hand hold more importance.
All the character building is done without a single line of dialogue from our protagonist. It's videogame story telling at its finest. Characters' responses are so well written that it isn't important to hear what Link said in the first place. When I was younger I thought that it was to help the player project themselves into the game. Now I realise that it's because Link doesn't need a voice. His character is presented in a much nicer way as it is, and putting words in his mouth could only spoil that.
One character that could have used a bit of work, though, is Navi. Known throughout the gaming world as one of the annoying characters of all time, Navi is actually made worse here. Not only does she constantly bug you with tips that are irrelevant or obvious, she now tells you when you've been playing too much and suggests that you should take a break. It's like a virtual mother reminding you that you still haven't tidied your room.
Newcomers
I may have been a bit rude in this review, assuming that you have all played this game at some point in your gaming life. If you haven't, I apologise.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is the best version of the game you can currently buy. If you've failed to pick up on the game in the past, this is the best place to jump in. In fact I'd go as far as saying that if you've never played this then it should be considered a system seller.
It follows the rather worn-out format of all the other games in the series, but it deals with the pace a lot better. It never tries to rush you through, but new things to find are never far away. It has boss battles, but fun ones. It has water levels, but ones that still feel fresh. It's a game that many others have tried to poach from, but have never quite taken its unique charm.
Ocarina of Time 3D's main story will keep you hooked but you'll still find time to explore in order to find hidden mini-games, characters and bonuses. There's enough to keep you busy for way over 20 hours and you'll never feel as though any of its content is getting old or tired.
It's a vision of what Nintendo can be, and represents why so many fans around the world stay completely loyal. It's the most relevant Link has ever and will ever be. As a gamer you really owe it to yourself to get a copy and start playing.
Conclusion
Amazingly, Nintendo has managed to improve on what I consider to be one of the greatest games of all time, with only the odd minor niggle being just a drop in the ocean of how good this game really is.
If you're a fan of the original, then you should get this in order to experience it again with the improved graphics and odd addition here and there. If you're new to it then you're in for a treat.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time is as fun and fulfilling on the 3DS as it has ever been and, to put it simply, you really should buy this game.
