The last part of the opening level I played involved a final car chase down the nearby highway. But it wasn’t any old car chase – Ruby decided to do the whole Matrix Reloaded thing with it and hop from car to car shooting goons to get to her prize. This scene is quite heavy on the Quick Time Events, but they give you some context and aren’t used as a simple replacement for gameplay (the bane of most QTEs).

Action here is down to aiming and firing at enemies trying to take you down as the cars you stand on swerve from left to right. Every now and then you’ll need to press the A button as Ruby leaps from vehicle to vehicle, and there’s even a point where you’ll need to overcome a huge truck that crashes in front of you. There are a few points where the button-pressing needed to be done before the prompt even appeared – something to fix there, A2M – but generally it gives you the feeling of a Hollywood chase scene while still giving you control of the proceedings.

I was surprised to find just how detailed Wet is – many games of this type tend to skimp on the textures and environments to focus on the number of enemies they can fit on screen at once, but A2M have taken some real care here to make the action completely insane, and the detail only enhances that. This is easily the studio’s best looking game yet.

We can expect unlockable moves and around ten hours of gameplay, according to the rep showcasing the game to me. There will be opportunities for combo and score attack leaderboards and plenty of settings that pay liberal homage to the grindhouse theme – including the ‘Diva Hall’ stage that features a girl troupe along the lines of the 5, 6, 7, 8’s from Kill Bill - as you beat down gangsters and a large guy with a machinegun who looks sort of like Jaws from Moonraker.

The big question will be if Wet can maintain its interesting flow without becoming tedious – that will rest solely on the level design. Based purely on what I’ve seen though, the game’s fantastic style, flurry of colours, shrapnel, blood and action could be just what many gamers are looking for.

I certainly does sound a lot like Stranglehold, but I quite enjoyed the demo of that game (infact I might have to go find a preown and give it a proper play)
