The 'Vocal Fighters' mini-game is okay. It is a simple one on one with multiple short battles to hit the most notes. But these sorts of games are all about being silly together, not actually endeavouring to best one another. I did win, by the way, just to make that clear.
You can also change the colour of the bars which guide your singing, stylising the appearance of the game to your own tastes, though I have no idea why you would be that bothered.
Each song then has co-op or multi-player options, a voice reduction element to get rid of original vocals altogether or just partly; and audio effects on your own singing – close your eyes and you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re in a recording studio, concert hall, bathroom or on the radio.
One of the ways
Lips stands out from the ever-popular
Singstar (aside from its use of cheap, unnecessary and confusing gimmicks as mentioned above), is by the option to upload music from a USB stick or your 360 hard drive to sing along to. This has divided opinion between my friends and I.
I, in my ever pessimistic cynicism, am right, of course.
Because, unfortunately, it would be too much to expect to be able to add voice recognition or a cross-referenced database. So, you end up hearing yourself ruining your favourite songs and picking up points for just making noise or shaking the mic. It persists in suggesting ridiculous poses to be pulled whilst singing including sticking out one finger. My protests of incredulity are drowned out, however, by the sounds of people half-mumbling songs and laughing. When the song is over though, we agree, it's a fruitless feature without having notes to hit.
[b]CONCLUSION
Lips displays the lyrics in a nice big font which will mean your mum doesn’t have to put her specs on to play. It’s another family fun game with nothing to offer the semi-serious gamer who will no doubt be saving up for Guitar Hero World Tour or Rock Band 2 and has already bought several Singstar editions which are clogging up the DVD rack from last Christmas, and the one before that, and the one before that.
