That said, the questions I had from the first game were answered, new ones were posed, and I had a lot of fun. And hang about! I haven't even touched on the two multi-player options; Co-operative and Competitive. Unfortunately, it's always difficult if not impossible to give a reasonable review of multi-player features prior to a game's launch - it's hard to come by a functioning server, let alone opponents. However, to give you some idea of what the game offers, here's a run down of the features;
Competitive
Just as with the original game, you opt to play as Human or Chimera, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Select from a set of 'Load Out' options, and you're given a choice of predefined weapon set-ups. With up to 60 players online simultaneously, the typical fayre of play modes are available; Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Core Control (Capture the Flag); there is also a mission-based mode called Skirmish where rival teams work towards a single objective.
Cooperative
With up to eight players, cooperative doesn't comprise simple Red vs Blue team-based arena battles. You play missions set alongside the single-player campaign. In a step toward more tactical game-play, you choose to engage as one of three classes: Soldier, Medic or Special ops. All earn experience points by killing and injuring the enemy, but each can gain more from other activities. Soldiers get points by taking cover behind a force shield. Medics, predictably, are rewarded for their healing skills. Special Ops can gain status by restocking the ammo of other team players.
Not limited to locations featured in the second game - multi-player grants you the opportunity to visit the exotic locales from the first game, including Bracknell and Axbridge, England. Suffice to say that
no places of worship are defamed during the playing of this game.
Conclusion
If Resistance 2 were to succumb to its Chimeran virus, it would have a lustrous carapace of visuals. Crack it open and it's got three highly developed gameplay organs. The two-weapon limit and disappointing boss battles are those little green organs - you know the ones, they leave a nasty taste. It's a game not to be missed by fans of story-led FPS, multi-player FPS and even survival horror types.
