Craptastic glory!
All in all, FlatOut is rather a pleasant surprise, and although it doesn’t compare to the AAA racing games we all know and love, its dim-witted approach could contribute to it being a bit of a surprise hit. It just feels simple and happy in a innocently retarded county-bumpkin type way. There’s nothing specifically jaw-drop worthy, but that ‘kart’ feel will bring an air of contentedness with it. If you’re a racing game fan, and you’ve already got Burnout 3 and Outrun 2, and need a light snack before the next big 24 course automobile extravaganza: this could be just the ticket.
SPOnG Rating B-
We were planning on sweeping this under the carpet with a stinky old brush, but actually, FlatOut is a thoroughly decent title. It’s not ground-breaking, but it does have an unexpectedly satisfying feel to it. It’s not supposed to be glamorous, and certain angles of the handling are plain scrappy; but, all the same, this is the shabby-chic choice for fans of light-hearted racing.
