Formed in the late 1980's to cater to the Amiga's burgeoning PD (public domain) and shareware scene, 17-Bit was one of the UK's primary catalogues for mail order Amiga PD software, carrying the snappy strapline "that bit better than the rest."
By 1990 the company began forging exclusive deals, effectively stepping into the role of publisher/distributor, beginning in 1990 with the game "Parachute Joust". That same year, a group of developer going by the name "Team7" approached 17-Bit to discuss publishing their new game - a slick "Street Fighter"-like beat 'em up. Rather than forging a developer-publisher relationship, 17-Bit and Team7 together founded a new development studio - Team17 Software. That beat 'em up was the company's first release; Full Contact.
17-Bit continued in its role as a PD catalogue well into the mid-1990s until, with the decline of the Amiga and the rise of the Internet, demand for its mail order discs waned.
17-Bit's first work that SPOnG is aware of is the 2016 title, "Galak-Z" (iPhone).
The company has been involved titles released on the iPhone.
