Hmm...feel free to call me an ignorant Yank, but whats the major objections with just using PEGI?

Seems like it would be a natural and organic part of the "EUnification" process to me...but I forget evrything I may have learnt about the two systems last time I (if you can call it that) researched them (prolly around the genesis of Byron report)

EDIT:OK brushed up a bit on both systems and the differences betwixt. Kinda unimpressed with the totality of the pro-BBFC argument, seems like any problems could be worked out.

Aye - they could be. And then the Daily Mail and the Daily Express will get hold of it and we would end up with:

Greasy Foreign Johnnies Say Blood Gore Games Good for Our Kids!

and

Ities and Frenchies Make Money from Our Kiddie's Video Game Hell

Or something like that. Also, unstitching the BBFC from the 'cultural life' of the UK presents problems to any government seeking to appear in control.

Frankly, if people can get up in arms about "Losing our quid notes means losing our freeeeedom!" and "Euro Nazis Kill Our Pints!" then giving 'our kids' to the Euro Nazis could bring down our currently chaotic government (I exaggerate for effect).

The BBFC will be keen to retain control because this government appointed private company makes a killing for doing what it does. Which is basically watch movies and play games all day.

It has a monopoly, and it wants to retain it.
