"with a whole different approach. We've generated something brand new."

The difference in the approach being what, exactly?

true, but it's entirely possible that they could become market leader, primarily because it's their main reason for being in the games console market, plus they have a long term plan for acheiving this and the resources to back it up.

as a longtime windows/pc user I have despised micro$oft and their policies for some time, seeing them devour or destroy other companies that got in their way, but them entering the games console market really pee'd me off no end.

Do you really think they could?

I dunno, it seems to me that most XBox owners are also PC owners and PC online game fans. There is still a huge PS fanbase out there who will buy the PS3 just because of the name 'Playstation'. Ive never liked the choke hold Sony have on the console market but i cant see M$ breaking it TBH.

If MS does, it's a frying pan/fire situation. See how MS has a choke hold on the OS market, and the, um, unorthodox methods it has used to ensure it keeps head.

Well, what was he going to say? "Uh, I doubt our next-gen Xbox will beat Sony"? MS might just do it, you know. Look at XBox - up pops MS, a new kid on the block, up against the well-established Sony and Nintendo - and after a slow start, it sells well and in some developers' eyes it is THE ONLY console that can really do what they want.
If MS times it right, prices it right and launches with a killer game, they could just pull it off.

They would definataly pull it off if they launched it with LIVE2 and one top class live game i couldnt see how any one would be able to match that at all.

If it was to launch with Splinter Cell 3,
Crimson Skies 2 (if its ever going to exist)
Rainbow Six 4
Kotor 2

I mean there just some of the names if it got a release with any of those it would obliterate the competition.

Also i know nearly every1 on xbox live is gonna buy it just to keep the same friends as they have now.

I can see you are a Live fan yourself but i still dont think the mainstay of console fans want online gaming, and i dont think the attraction of this is enough to buy over the majority of PS owners. Add to this the proven record of sales in Japan and i think M$'s argument is a little weak.

I own all three consoles at the moment but except for a few key titles such as PDS, Halo and KOTOR i dont really give it much time.

I played a bit of online gaming on the DC but im not that really into it. Give me four player MarioKart or Monkey Ball any day. Is still think though that most PS and Nintendo fans agree with me here.

Fair point :) Doesnt stop MK and MonkeyBall being some of the best multiplayer games around though does it. If they were on the PS they would have been huge sellers.

Back to topic though; unless M$ can come up with a wider appeal of games and prices then its never going to take over the PS market. Too much aimed at cheap online gimmicks IMO. Half the Live games out dont even have proper online functionality.

yes indeed, I much prefer having a few mates round for multi-player, occasionally we meet up online for PC games, but sessions round my house is where it's at. :)
In fact, I wish they would take home multi-player gaming further, have 6 controllers instead of 4, I remember seeing a prototype Dreamcast with 6 controller ports, widescreen TVs could handle 6 player split-screen.

For crazy multi-player gaming nothing beats the Sega Saturn tho, 10 player Bomberman or 7 player Death Tanks. Sweet.

I think I'm probably just too old to get into any serious online gaming.
