Unbelievable!! Just when I thought the Sony monkeys couldn't put their foot any further in their mouth they pull this on us. They are sounding like some kind of dictator right now.

So will I be getting a PS3 now? Certainly not that 40gb piece of crap. If I can't get a 60gb model with what I need in it, I guess I'll just have to skip PS3 this generation. Idon't like to say it, as there's alot of games I like the look of coming to PS3. However, Sony's Europes debacles know no bounds.

This is either a ploy to boost PS2 sales or just plain utter madness. After years of good stuff on PS1 and PS2, you lot u-turn and screw the customers. Well you know what, until you Sony fools can communicate with customers and find out why PS3 isn't shifting, I'm opting out of PS3. Let me get this traight for you, I hope those 40gb models don't shift either, because it will teach you idiots not to mess with the customer or chopping and changing PS3s insides.

Congratulations Sony, you've just dug your own grave. Feel free to bury yourselves, while we watch and laugh. Damn fools.

Will the 40GB version be the only model, or will we get the 80GB version?

Either way this is an incredibly stupid move, why replace the more expensive model with a cheaper one which lacks backwards compatibility?

Sony are ignoring their biggest userbase (PS2 gamers) by leaving out backwards compatibility.

I hope we get the 80GB version, if not this is commercial suicide.

Well, the people who care could have bought a PS3 earlier. It's funny, because I got one about a week before the price-cut anouncement, and now I don't really mind! I hope they don't remove it from the old versions, though - that would really be annoying!

I remember getting a PS2, and at the time I bought quite a few PS1 games to play on it as well - but it didn't make me buy fewer PS2 games - I ended up with about 30, which is more than I can play! There weren't any PS1 games that I bought, though, that had PS2 equivalents.

The other thing is, they should look at the price difference between their games - if the PS2 version is £20, when the PS3 version is £50, and even the XBox 360 version is £40, who's even going to choose the PS3 version at all? I think if it was a bit more even, it would work out better for them.

What I'm basically trying to say is, once they release Home and GT5, people will buy more PS3s ;)

I've been accused of that in the past, but I'm not so much pee'd off right now as bemused.

Firstly, I'm not annoyed at Sony because I have a PS3, have had it since day one (minute 40 or so if you want to know) and I've been happy with is since I bought it. I'm not annoyed at the £75 price drop for the model I've got because I've had my six or so months of fun.

I am bemused because, like many others here, I'd have though that dropping the BC side of things would have annoyed the 120M+ PS2 owners out there and removed their logical upgrade path to the current-gen machines.

By not providing BC, Sony have forced those PS2 owners to keep their PS2s or start from scratch again. If thy keep their PS2s, they will upgrade later because they don't have the trade-in value (such that it is) of the PS2 to set against their cost of the PS3. If they start from scratch, they may like to look of the 360 and upgrade that way instead.

Maybe they have conducted focus groups and consultations and removed BC because nobody wants it, but I just can't see it myself. I'd have thought they would have spent the time since they decided to manufacture the new PS3 model working on the BC for the graphics chip and cover their bases.

In summary, not annoyed but very, very confused.

Fine. Sony have taken away the BC... But who actually wants to play old games on your PS3... If you buy a PS3 you will buy the latest games. You wont buy it to play your old games. I think sony only had BC at the start so that they will get sales. I think they were always going to get rid of it. Along the road when we get to PS5... do we really extect to be able to play PS1 games... I dont think so.... Come on people.... If someone is goin to buy a PS3, they will do it for the cheap blue ray and the next gen games. That's what the system is built for...

I was considering it. Sony have cost themselves a potential sale, at least in my case. My PS2 broke down a few weeks ago, and while I can't afford a PS3 at the moment, I was thinking about getting one in future to play the PS2 games I never got to finish. Now, however, that option has been taken away from me, and I'll have to get another PS2 from eBay or something. I will not be bothering with PS3 at all any more. Take that, Sony.

So will Sony be offering anything to compensate those of us that did buy the 60gb ps3 and will be looking or recieving no further backwards compatability support?

I happen to own two of the 60gb ps3's at the moment.. looks like both will be going on ebay, sorry Sony but id never get this kind of announcement or reaction from Microsoft about my 360!

Master, Sony pitch the BC as a key feature of PS3, (check their official PS3 announcement from way back when) so for them to remove it is a big freaking deal for gamers. Many people keep their games for PS2, on the back of Sony's promise, so I can totally understand the feeling of being conned and cheated. I also think you underestimate the strength of current/previous gen games.

I think its official, Sony don't give a monkeys about gamers anymore and are selling us out. They clearly are out of touch with us, if they think they can remove BC from PS3 and not feel our friend pain.

Not just that, I'm still wondering what they are gonna do with DS3, are they gonna let people swap their Sixaxis for DS3 or not?

Clearly. mo PS3s, mo problems.

I'm so glad I have my 360. If something goes wrong with it, MS seeks to fix it free of charge. Simple gestures like this speak volumes over anything Sony is doing and show MS care more.

You can learn from them, Sony.

Exactly, fair enough the 360 does have a problem with red ring of death, but least they fixed them.. and give you extra warranty.. and a free month of xbox live for the inconvience and sort it all as quickly as possible.

I thought Sony may have learn't from Microsofts superior support last time round, when a xbox would get repaired free even if outside of warranty while all the ps2 laser problems were charged by Sony. I guess they just dont want us anymore.. which is fine by me, both ps3's going on ebay and will upgrade from my premium to a 360 elite and a shedload of games.

Gun, shot, bullet, foot.. bye bye Sony.
