It clearly is a retaliation against the functionality of the Wii. No doubt and any critic is just in denial. Naturally, I expect Nintendo to just roll over and let this happen to them rather then sue for intullectual property violations at least. Still, the differences that the Wii (price, controller, size, games) doesn't mean Sony has just stolen all of the thunder from Nintendo.
It's not a Wii rip at all, it's just a gyroscopic controller and so has no sense of depth or anything like that which the Wii has. It's just a kind of replacement to fill the insides with as they have no vibration anymore. They've been using tilt controls since the days of Atari...
All in all I was impressed. The games looked spectacular and it all seemed fine. Looking forward to getting reviews of how they play on the ground...
I agree, I mean, my SG controller for Guitar Hero has tilt control... What are they caling this controller? It isn't the Dual Shock 3, as there's no shock anymore. And $600? I'm going Wii Wii Wii all the way home.
Most of you are right. Sony have clearly been scared by Nintendo's controller and retalliated by putting something half as good in there. They've also tried to copy XBox live as well. This makes me so cross.
I think it should be known that sony is trying to cover up the fact that there is a greater difference then just the harddrive in the $499 version. This comes from the sony press release as reported by IGN...
"The announcement earlier tonight that the PS3 would come in two separate configurations easily caught the ear of PS3 fans eager for any news of Sony's system. However, upon closer analysis of the images for the systems itself, a rather curious system feature seemed to be missing from the 20 gig configuration.
Looking at the official press site of SCEA, we noticed that the PS3 with the 20 gigabyte hard drive seemed to lack HDMI support. This seems to be confirmed by an offical press release from SCEA, which indicates via comparison between the two systems. However, it also indicates that the 20 gigabyte system won't have Memory Stick, SD or Compact Flash reading capability or WiFi support. Even worse, it appears that rumble doesn't appear to be included with the new six axis sensing controller.
Could the 20 gig become a gamer shunned system? When Microsoft launched the Xbox 360, consumers hated the Core system that didn't come with a hard drive and other features, quickly dubbing it the "tard pack." Will the 20 gig suffer the same fate? We'll have more details as we get them from the show.
Update: It also appears that Sony has ditched dual-HDMI support altogether, even from its high-end 60GB system. Whether or not the system is still capable of running dual-displays by using both HDMI and the AV multi-out is unknown.
Also, Sony announced that the Blu-ray disc drive in the PS3 will run at 2X, or roughly 72Mbps."
well, the Wii controller does a hell of a lot more than tilt, but anyway, wtf happened to the 'boomerang'? talk about caving in to fanboy whinging. do they have so little confidence in their own designs? another thing is, although I dont mind the lack of a rumble feature, it's a pretty big step to remove it altogether.
pricing is higher than I thought they would go, and you can guarantee there'll be a 360 price cut come Xmas, but I think Wii may be the only console I get on, or close to, launch.

Right wiith you on that one! Plus, reading Sony's announced prices and launch dates reveals that they're still running Sony Economics...:
$499 = €499 $599 = €599
...plus one week (supposedly, won't be surprised if it turns out to be one year actually).
Not really that surprised with the price, although it does give MS a little slack.
£270/£340 vs £210/£280... not a huge difference, but I agree with ohms - MS may well widen the gap further by Xmas. £150/£200 would certainly be in the range consumers (especially parents) have now become accustomed to paying for consoles.
actually i think you mean... £210/£340 and £280/£410! plus m$ will drop in price before xmas as they have already said. so keeping a similar pricing structure and a drop of £60, that makes their consoles £150 and £220.
and as mentioned earlier people shun the core/basic packages, and the wii is supposed to be around £200.
in other words, 360 - £220, wii - £200, ps3 - £410!! double the price is gonna hurt!
...my take on this, the controller sucks, its blatent stab at wii and the center button is a stab at 360. plus no rumble! personally i love my rumble. as for the console, looks impressive and bluray a nice but on the whole useless addition. the people with hd tvs and interested in buying bd movies are the people who are minted and 'an affordable bluray player' isnt really an issue. probably the best graphics of the three, but wii has already conceeded defeat and taken a different path. 360 graphics arent really any different to be fair. is it worth double the price of the other two which seem to have all groups/options covered!
Sony Press Conference...Hmmm no surprises there. Not even the fact that Sony took a concept from Nintendo. I don't know what you but there was nothing mind blowing during the conference.
Well my take on it all is this. Overpriced with a gimmick tilt controller (PS2 had them before, they might aswell had left the rumble fucntion in but just improved the feedback). I'll try to give them the beneft of the doubt to see what they do with that controller but it seems very fishy to me.
If Sony came last because of their greed and stupidity then that's fine but many of us will miss a lot of games because of the price (and we all know what Sony are like when it comes to price cuts, a Ps3 won't be affordable for many for a good while.
I think it will be interesting to see which way developers and publishers jump if ps3 goes wobbly.
Wii and 360 it'll be for me then, as much as I'd like all three.

The guide button isn't that much of a stretch if they're attempting to put a dashboard like interface in the back. If they hadn't included it everyone would be calling them idiots, its not a biggie.
I'm suprised theres no rumble, I guess that lawsuit last year scared them away and given MS now owns part of the company they'd be screwed paying royalties. I'm not too fussed about the lack though, as I normally play without mine on. I think the rumble was always a nice idea but it never really grabbed me and it made my arms ache when I played for long periods - I doubt that people will miss it much, noone will be saying this game is great, but the lack of rumble features reduces it from an excellent to a good.
The gyroscopic thing, I can't see too much game functionality past driving or flying games. It just seems to be a spoiling tactic so they can compare themselves to the Wii. I'm hoping they'll suprise me with some innovation inside other genres.
I think the 2 sku thing is a good tactic, especially with harddrives as standard but I'm surpised by that some functionality for the 20gig version is missing. People expected a loss in features with the core 360 as it didn't have a harddrive - if sony are going to be charging more then the premium 360 and including a harddrive I imagine a lot of people feeling burned about getting the 20 gig at xmas. Especially as its going to be hard to justify it to Joe Public.
That controller looks alright. I reckon the rumble feature was dropped due to the lawsuit and maybe the health complaints they were getting for giving kids vibration white finger and nothing at all to do with trying to steal a rival companies thunder. I doubt if the tilt feature will get used much so I don't see it being a big deal or any deal at all. Still it's there if they want it.
I honestly can't believe the 2 tier pricing and scond class version of the system though. Sure 360 had a cheap version but it was the same system, had all the same bits only lacked a Harddisk. I can't believe if they release PS3 without wifi and the HD and my god!!! even the memory stick support!!!!!
