That is THE best timed gadget ever. By that point I'll have the spare cash to import it, and will do so.

That, right there, is sexy as hell.

Yup, it's not as good as I was hoping, but much better. Will be getting one.

Thankfully I'm going to Japan in April and I'll pick one up then.

A smaller, sleeker, sexier DS is all well and good... but will it be any comfier?

The current one's OK, but sustained MK sessions can bring on my "gaming claw".

Using an even smaller DS, I'd end up needing one of these:

Why not wait until the white one is out here, then you'll be able to import one of the inevitable special coloured versions that will be out in Japan by then?

While I love the look of the new DS and will probably buy one, I see this as another of Nintendo's "release often" tactics.

Is 15 months or so (Nov 21 2004 - Mar 2 2006) long enough to justify a revision of the hardware? The GBA to GBA-SP gap was just under two years (Mar 21 2001 - Feb 14 2003) and was painfully required due to the awful screen.

It was obvious at E3 2004 that the design of the DS should change. Why wasn't the design updated more between May and November? The design of the Lite could easily have been used for the original run of the DS.

Nintendo have a real predilection for limited edition hardware and quick re-designs with their handheld consoles and everybody just laps them up!

If Sony had done this with the PSP everybody would be up in arms about their money grabbing tactics.

Why do we (and I include myself in this, since I'm probably getting a Lite) put up with this from Nintendo?

Now, this is just simply beautiful. I was fearing they'd do some multimedia playback s**t with this; glad they haven't.

If I were to nitpick, it would be the uppercase button labels. I love the lowercase a and b buttons on the micro; the same style could work for the lite. But you know, I also complain about how springs don't sound as springy in Sonic Adventure as they do in Sonic 3 xD.

Anyway, I'm sure as hell getting one. But I want it in black, so I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer.

Glad you are now going to get one Doctor.
Owning a DS has made me smile more than almost any other console I've ever owned, I hope other folk get the same out of it as I do.

Has anyone noticed how much of a genius idea re-designing your hardware is? They always put the price of them UP. Sell loads of them, then raise the price and nobody bats an eyelid. Genius.

I like this new version a lot though. It fixes what was wrong with the old one and it makes the old one look like te prototype that is always was.

Mainly because the PSP didn't look like a duck's arse to start with.

I don't think 15 months (or whatever) is too short a time to start wanging improved versions into the market. With the DS looking like it did (like a ducks arse) 10 miutes would have been too long.

They've already white-ised the PSP.

Indeed a nice redesign, simple and more effective. I'll be buying again that's for sure.

When Nintendo redesign stuff it's for the better. If you feel you don't want to buy just use the previous DS, I'm suremany will be traded in now.

Come on, do Ford always sell you the same car every year? A new car will get you the same place as the old model, it's up to you to invest or not for that journey.

I'll try pick on up for the summer too. I'm sure the GBASP will perhaps be faded out more now.

Is it me or does it really look incredible compatible with the Revolution design? Has Nintendo been hiring good Apple people recently? Joining forces to kill of the PSP even faster?

What's next? Pixar Studio's making animated movies based on Nintendo IP (which would so ROCK!)?

To be honest, I'm not as annoyed as I would have been if I had been an owner of the original GBA, because my DS doesn't suffer any functional issues such as a rubbish screen. I even applauded the decision to release the Game Boy Advance SP, as it addressed an issue that many had complained about as being detrimental to the play experience. But I've barely had my DS for a month (as well as countless others that got theirs over Christmas), and now they've gone and redesigned the thing. I'm not swayed by the looks, and I won't be buying one of the new systems. I simply don't need it.

The question is just why Nintendo felt it so necessary to redesign the system? I don't imagine this will reduce the cost to the consumer, and the original design has sold extremely well despite being a bit on the ugly side.

Like I said, should have been re-designed after E3 2004 and before launch. Once you have launched with a duck's arse design, it then becomes a cynical cash-in to re-design the thing a year and a quarter after launch.

True, I'd forgotten about that. However, one extra colour is different to a total re-design. Especially when different coloured PSPs were shown in the materials released at E3 2004.

They KNOW there is a large audience who would never be seen dead with the mark one DS, but who wil jump at a new model that doesn't look like a toy.

Refreshingly, I find myself disagreeing with you for once. They haven't changed the form factor of the software. No one who already has a DS NEEDS to buy this. Nintendo hasn't purposefully held back functionality to release a warm update, or introduced marginal new features to create demand (Like Apple often does with the iPod).

They have just made something that was ugly enough to put off marginals like me pretty enough to stop putting us off.

It does not strike me as cyncial. Neither would releasing a different colour DS/PSP every month. You don't have to buy them.
