this "gameboy" is either the ds sp which i have been saying for some time now that they will show (just a guess), or a gba sp SP. however, i doubt that it will be an entirely new gameboy. to early, and nintendo have several times said that NO, we wont show any new gameboy at this e3.

If there is any truth to this, the gameboy will have a bigger better screen, and a hard drive to download games wirelessly. Something wireless must exist simply because this will have to tie into the Revolution plans.

I totally agree with you. True wireless gaming is a must.
For the most part, I still hope that this new GB wont be a rehash of old concepts. Perhaps Nintendo's plan all along was to pull a Sony. Nintendo dangled the worm in front of Sony and Sony bit. They let out some line and now all Nintendo has to do is hook them with a better concept than the PSP.
Personally though, I don't find the PSP all that special as of yet. Neither the DS for that matter. If this truly is the next iteration of GB, Nintendo must include good launch games, it's a travesty that they didnt with the DS.

Well, Spong...if this is true, then Reggie and other Nintendo will have been flat out lying to several different news outlets (CBS for one) about there not being a new Gameboy shown at E3 this year.

But if it's a no show, I'm sure it'll be just because Iwata had heart problems and didn't want to risk showing it of course.

Well, this is bit of a change of tune for SPoNG. Previous articles have made it sound like a PSP-killing 3D Gamecube portable. Now we find out it might literally be a GBA2.

If it is, it's not going to have any affect on the market, and SPoNG will have had their knickers in a twist over nothing.

Good people, I'm sure that E3 will spill the beans for us soon. Perhaps the new GB is the portable GC everyone is yapping about. I'd like to see it come with so old SNES classics on it and the rest that we can legally download as well as playing it's own games.

Damn, May is a senses overload month. We have Episode 3 to watch and E3 goings on to keep a third eye on. Now all I need is my team Liverpool to win the Champions League as the sweetest icing on the cake.

I would absolutley love a DS sp.
The design of the DS is as if the Prince of All Cosmos from Katamari Damacy fell through Nintendos R&D department and someone, whilst compressed amongst all the various bits and bobs, had an epiphany and started to put together a handheld.

Don't get me wrong I love my DS but if there is a new handheld due for xmas and no developers bar one or two have a dev kit for it, then I see it having the same problems that Nintendos other consoles have; that is a startling lack of choice of games for it.

I mean, now that I have had my PSP for sometime I can see the problems with it.
I just put in Spiderman 2 and apart from the game being very boring I would much rather Spiderman 2 on the big screen off of my ps2.
The same with Ridge Racer and Wipeout.
They [Ridge Racer and Wipeout] are great games but I'd much rather play them on the big screen on my PS2.
(Another problem is the screen is too reflective; if you take it outside all you see is your own face staring back at you).
But the choice of games for it are both appealing and 'serious' Ridge Racer and Wipeout are serious arcade racers and the prospect of PES on the psp has me in a serious jones over here.

The DS whilst a very unique concept has little to no choice of serious* games for it.
The concept of the DS is great and very forward thinking but I think that for the general public blowing into the console as a control method is too far (and too fast) a step to take.
I just wish they slipped in some serious non novelty games in amongst the groundbreakers (not to mention not relying too heavily on it's own IP).

If they repackage the DS and make it SP'ish then it would be taken more seriously which is good.
If they are creating a new handheld that doesnt have widespread developer support (or take advantage of the GC backcatalogue) then, well, thats bad.

*by serious I mean acceptable to be seen playing it in public over the age of say 20. I know it's messed up but damn it I can't be seen blowing into my DS on the Tube that s**t aint cool yo.

If you want my take on it, I think Nintendo will mention more future specs for a new Game Boy for Winter 2006 at E3 2006.

But at E3 2005, they will probably reveal an extended version of the current generation.

Each version of the Game Boy has at least one or two upgrades in it. We were supposed to get a slimmer GBC, but it didn't pan out due to pushing the GBA through. Each previous generation has had more than one iteration aside from the GBC.

Game Boy
(Brick - Pocket - Light)

Super Game Boy (Home Console models)
(Model 1, Model 2, WideBoy, Game Boy Player)

Game Boy Color
(Version 1)

Game Boy Advance
(Landscape, SP)

It stands to term that the GBA needs one more iteration. I blame the threat of a new Sega portable, and a bit of advertising pressure from smaller companies like SNK, and Bandai for causing Nintendo to push out the GBA earlier than they wanted to. I think the Nintendo DS is meant to fragment the handheld industry by creating a whole other "casual market" handheld. The Nintendo DS is that market handheld. The Game Boy Next (Or Evolution) is the step up. The Nintendo DS is their "almost" 64-bit handheld with it's two 32-bit processors. The PSP is also a 64-bit system. The Game Boy Next only needs to have an ARM11 Core in it with the added GBA/GBC chipset as well to kick the PSPs collective ass.
For example:
Sony PSP Chipset runs = 125 Dhrystone MIPS
ARM 11 MPCORE runs = 650 Dhrystone MIPS

Although it notes you can daisy chain up to four of the ARM 11 MPCORES for up to 2600 Dhrystone MIPS performance. The PSP is running a custom version of the same chip the N64 is running. When I first saw Death Jr.. it occured to me that this may be the case. After seeing more games on the system, people... the PSP is -graphics wise- what the N64 would have been had the N64 used CDs. The next Game Boy system will have to be customized, of course. Oh, quick tip... I'll report this on my own site as well, but ARM lists the ARM11 chip as made for Handheld Game Players, and Wireless Capability.

So, yeah. The GBN(E?) will be pretty powerful. For now, I think Nintendo will release a somewhat thicker version of the GBA SP but call it the GBA MX for Media Extension. The unit will have the Play-Yan built into it, feature an SD card slot, a new screen, and come in at under $100. It may also feature an unusual feature that Nintendo has been considering. You can create a secure section in your SD card with the unit, and then "upload" a copy of whatever GBC/GB game is in the unit. This encrypted file can be played on other GBA MX units. The reason for this? To allow the next generation of Game Boy to use ONLY a Disc Medium and an SD card slot. Meaning, if you want to play your old copy of Tetris in the GBE, you must first pop it into the GBA MX, copy it to your SD Card and then put the SD card ino the GBE. So you can have save games, music, movies, AND your old GB/GBC games at your disposal all the time. If you want to keep playing GBA games on the go, just hold on to your GBA MX or the Nintendo DS.

Pretty hot stuff, isn't it?

The DS is wireless, the new Gameboy doesn't need to be, although it would help.

They already announced internet play on their next system....

and unlike other micro-ripoff companies...

Nintendo's online is free.

What I'm looking forward to the most on E3, is whether Nintendo will realese a "pack" for the DS which will make it like a Palm Handheld. Internet, Yahoo messenger, E-mail, music, movies, on a DS.... Gaaahh!.... *drooling*

I disagree. But then, I would, wouldn't I? What we've said before is that a new Game Boy would be shown at E3. That's as much as we've "known" and even then,we were not supposed to know it. Do you imaging that nintendo has laid all their plans out to a news site reknowned for breaking things early?

Previous articles have made it sound like a PSP-killing 3D Gamecube portable.

We have then speculated that, given the existence of the DS, and the superiority of the PSP, that the only logical thing would be a PSP equivalent or better. And I, for one, still hold this opinion. The PSP is available, sexy, and affordable. Why would anyone buy a GBA with racing stripes?

But Nintendo have a way of pulling things out of the bag... so we're alll waiting to see now.

Now we find out it might literally be a GBA2.

II think we did, literallly, say it would be GBA2, now I'm worried that it might not even be that...

If it is, it's not going to have any affect on the market, and SPoNG will have had their knickers in a twist over nothing.

OK! If you think a new piece of Nintendo hardware is "nothing", that's your call. But you'll recall that everyone called us liars for saying there would be any new GBA hardware - indeed Alan is still hinting at that.

Now it seems that you want to reframe the terms of reference o that if there is new hardware, but we didn't guess EXACTLY what it was, we're still wrong.

Saying Nintendo might be in danger under certain circumstances would be acceptable, but claiming that it's going to fall is pretty bold statement.
By the way, i'm sure Gizmondo and M$ will make it.

I don't think you're liars (I wouldn't be a regular if I did!) but I do think that your previous articles were phrased in such a way that it made it sound that a PSP-style GB was a near certainty.

Anyway, roll on E3.
