Well, I wasn't going to get a DS. I've changed my mind. I'm getting one as soon as it's released in Europe.
The amount of quality software for the DS seems ever-increasing and now with the media player and PDA add-ons, things that I was thinking of buying anyway, the DS is now a must-puchase.
I'm now actually beginning to change my mind about the PSP winning the handheld wars.

It's going to be interesting. The PSP is so alluring - even without games running on it, much more so than the DS.
But games-wise, the DS seems to be offering alternatives to the current 32-bit home gaming systems, whereas with the PSP it's more of the same. However, the big question is whether the public actually want quirky innovative products, or yet another GTA/ Gran Turismo etc.
PS
After listening to all the hype regarding the PSP's overall beauty - not least the screen - I couldn't help feel it was all a bit OTT. However, after receiving my PSP this morning, my first controlled, considered reaction was: "F*ck me!! The screen! It's MASSIVE!". Followed shortly by me pawing it and muttering: "My precious". Ahem.
The question is: does yours actually work? How's your Square button and UMD drive? I'm interested because even though i've seen the damning video footage i want to know if they're real concerns and not just anti-corp crap...

The square button definitely feels different to the other three; it has less of an affirmative "bite". But it's fine.
No dead pixels.
UMD drive is lovely and flush, no kinks or anything. Honestly, the build quality seems very good, but only prolonged use will provide that answer I guess.
