God guys, of course it was staged, it's a freaking tech demo. It's there to advertise the project... Why are we surprised about this?? Companies always do this when showing off merchandise, they want to present it in the best light.
That doesn't mean its a piece of crap though or that it doesn't work. People who have seen it have said it is functional, not perfect (obviously) but functional. It all works it just feels forced at times, which is to be expected from any attempt at AI, especially towards someone the program doesn't recognize. Clearly it isn't going to be perfect but that isn't the point, MS have brought this forward and are attempting to use it. The technology is a great step forward but its up to them to make the most of it. The same applies to sony, with their light wands.
Every demo like this that you see in a video will be prepared and set up in some way. THATS THE POINT, people don't just film crap randomly, this isn't you-tube. Sure it might be a slight exaggeration, but frankly i applaud Molyneux for constantly pushing the boundaries. He bites off more than he can chew and thats really what this industry needs in order to see some true progress. Natal does exist and it does work. There is no point in being jealous or enraged by it because sony has pretty much the same technology.
Honestly if anyone considered this to be 100% truthful when they watched it then they're stupid. It is the idea I find inspiring, not necessarily the exact way its been shown. It's entirely possible for the camera to capture a photo of a piece of paper and detect the color (and for whoever says they don't show the fish, just watch the video again). It's entirely possible for someone to be enticed to reach out and grab something. Molyneux wasn't saying that they would "lose the game", it simply represents an individual being engaged with the tech. In a way not seen within more mundane mediums.
I really don't know what everyone is going on about with regards to making the water move. In assuming the whole point of this article is to tease Natal's credibility, the water may have been slightly jipped in the video itself (Although I personally didn't notice anything wrong with it, not to say there wasn't). But what does that matter, moving water with a video??? Thats not impossible, both my ps3 and xbox do that now with a webcam attached.
In the end I'm just saying don't rip them down for wanting to present something in the best way possible. They are a business simply trying to get our attention, to which they have clearly succeeded. ;)

Don't forget about the skateboard scan they did in E3. It didn't scan the kids hands (even though they where in the way) but somehow managed to get a perfect scan of the art design on the board.

I watched the video again and looked for what they complained about at the times they mentioned. I didn't notice anything off.

It took me a while to see what you were on about, but yes, I think the gesture with her left hand reaching out to touch a fish happened a fraction of a second after the ripple started. Meaning it's all just carefully practiced gestures set to a pre-recorded video.
The disappointing thing is this seems to be the only part of the video that demonstrates the sensor actually doing something. It seems clear that all the dialog is scripted at this point, though I'm sure they want to get the software to recognize key words. The fish drawing demonstrates nothing, you don't even get to see what the camera actually scanned.
Then again, I see no reason why they can't get the fish toucher minigame working eventually, it's no more difficult then games done on the i-toy for the ps2. What I'm truly skeptical about is that they'll ever get the personal interaction to the point where you can suspend disbelief. More likely it will feel like navigating a robot phone tree. Only the tree will be staring at you the whole time.

Project Natal is in the works.. It works nothing like we have seen an it is widely over exaggerated. There was so many little things in all of the videos that you can clearly see that it was staged. The tech works to a degree at this point but the demo's they showed people doing with it .. Give it about 3 more years till they get to that point. About the kid an the Skateboard that had to be there biggest f**k up they totally forgot about that 1 MS LoL... The water ripples comon now if you believe this then your dumber then those who believe Jesus was born in December. Just like the other guy said its advertising they wanted to Promote Natal because they have absolutely nothing big coming out an what has the most buzz from MS Conference .. Job done *applaud on behalf of MS* They tricked us again lol but then again if MS wasn't good at tricking its consumers would Bill Gates or MS be where there at today. This is not to discredit Natal or anything like that but they made it seem alot better then where its currently at. An before I get the fanboy flames I own both systems an play on both frequently so dont try that .. Remember there is no console war, Just teenage kids with not enough of mommies money to afford both.. So now we have side pickers. I like both just like everything in life both have there pro's an there con's. Why you get both so you dont miss out on anything an dont have to worry about turning into a fanboy.. You dont want either to win if your a true gamer.. Competition brings innovation!!!

When she puts up the fish and he grabs it.... well, thats it, how would he know? He looks at it and it obvious that he cant see the picture BECAUSE THE PAGE WAS NEVER FULLY VISIBLE. Watch the video again, and see her put it up to the camera. Its the equivalent of someone shoving a RIGHT up to your face and expecting you to see it. Plus, notice how they never actually SHOW the picture, both on and off screen?
